Abuja LEA Primary School Draws Global Attention as Pupils Reportedly See Their Teacher Once a Week

A newly completed public primary school in Abaji Area Council, Abuja, has reportedly deteriorated due to severe teacher absenteeism, leaving more than 100 pupils stranded with no learning taking place.

The school, LEA Primary School, Dumi, located in Gawu Ward, has turned into a “ghost facility,” with teachers allegedly showing up only once a week and staying for barely an hour before disappearing for long stretches.

Civil society group MonITNG, which visited the school, raised alarm over locked classrooms, overgrown premises, and declining enrollment as frustrated parents either withdraw their children or keep them at home due to the absence of teaching.

The group has called on FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Senator Ireti Kingibe, and education authorities to urgently intervene, restore accountability, deploy committed teachers, and rehabilitate the facility to prevent further learning losses.

The situation adds to growing concerns over the state of public education in the Federal Capital Territory, especially in rural communities like Abaji.
