Lecturers at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, down tools after two-week ultimatum to Niger State Government expires.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL) chapter, has declared a total and indefinite strike with immediate effect following an emergency congress held by the union.
The industrial action comes after the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued to the Niger State Government over the continued non-implementation of critical components of the 2025 Federal Government/ASUU Agreement.
The Chairperson of ASUU-IBBUL, Galadima Bala, said the decision was reached after the union exhausted several avenues of dialogue and engagement with relevant authorities and stakeholders without achieving satisfactory progress on the outstanding issues.
According to the union, while Niger State had previously been regarded as one of the states that promptly implemented national agreements, the 2025 agreement is yet to be fully implemented despite several other state-owned universities having commenced implementation.
Bala described the strike as a painful decision but stressed that the union remains open to genuine, meaningful and result-oriented dialogue with the relevant authorities.
He, however, noted that the patience of ASUU members is not unlimited, adding that the industrial action could be suspended once there is clear evidence of commitment and concrete steps towards implementing the agreement and resolving the outstanding issues.
The union also expressed regret over the inconvenience the strike may cause students, parents and other stakeholders, while maintaining that the responsibility for restoring industrial harmony lies with the urgent resolution of the issues that triggered the action.
