BREAKING: Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara Dumps PDP For APC

Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), according to a report by Sahara Reporters.

The defection was reportedly announced during a crucial stakeholders’ meeting held on Tuesday at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The move comes amid sustained political tension in Rivers State following months of conflict between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, now FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Major Political Shift in Rivers State

Fubara’s defection marks a significant turning point for Rivers State, long considered a PDP stronghold. His move to APC follows the earlier defection of at least 17 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, giving the APC a major political advantage in the state.

The development is expected to dramatically reshape the state’s political landscape, especially ahead of future elections.

Background of the Crisis

Rivers State has witnessed prolonged political instability driven by the feud between Fubara and Wike, leading to parallel legislative sittings, legal battles, and even a six-month emergency rule earlier in the year. Fubara’s exit from the PDP adds a new dimension to the already tense power struggle.

What This Means

Political analysts say Fubara’s move could:

  • Consolidate APC’s control in Rivers State
  • Further weaken PDP’s influence in the South-South region
  • Trigger additional defections among political appointees and lawmakers
  • Shape national political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections

The PDP has yet to issue an official reaction to the governor’s defection.
