Las Vegas jury convicts former gang leader in landmark case over 1996 shooting that claimed the life of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur

Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been found guilty of the murder of American rap icon Tupac Shakur, nearly three decades after the celebrated musician was fatally shot in Las Vegas.

A jury in Las Vegas convicted the 63-year-old Davis of first-degree murder with a deadly weapon following a closely watched trial over the September 1996 killing.

Prosecutors argued that Davis played a key role in organising the attack that resulted in Tupac Shakur being shot multiple times while travelling in a vehicle along the Las Vegas Strip.

Davis, a former gang leader, has acknowledged being present in the vehicle from which the shots were fired. However, prosecutors did not allege that he was the person who pulled the trigger.

The prosecution’s case centred on allegations that Davis provided the firearm and helped organise the retaliation after an earlier confrontation involving Tupac and members of Davis’ group.

Shakur, one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history, was 25 when he was shot on September 7, 1996. He died six days later from his injuries.

The murder remained officially unsolved for years, becoming one of the most enduring mysteries in music history and generating numerous theories about who was responsible for the rapper’s death.

Davis’ arrest in 2023 marked a major breakthrough in the long-running investigation. His conviction now represents the first successful prosecution directly connected to Shakur’s murder.

Davis faces a possible life sentence without parole, with sentencing scheduled for October 13, 2026.

His lawyers have indicated that they intend to appeal the conviction.

The case has continued to attract worldwide attention because of Shakur’s lasting influence on music and popular culture. Nearly 30 years after his death, the rapper remains one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history.
