Nigeria’s Health Minister, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, confirms the evacuation of the country’s first imported Ebola patient from Abuja to Switzerland, assuring Nigerians that containment measures remain in place.
The Federal Government has confirmed the medical evacuation of Nigeria’s first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) to Switzerland, following significant improvement in the patient’s clinical condition.
The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, disclosed the development on Monday, October 26, 2026, stating that the patient departed Abuja earlier in the day with his approval.
According to the minister, the patient was clinically much improved, stable, conscious and able to communicate before the evacuation. Her laboratory test results were also approaching baseline levels.
However, Pate cautioned that the improvement did not necessarily mean the patient was no longer infectious, stressing that strict public health protocols remained essential throughout the medical transfer.
The patient was accompanied by her spouse, who had remained asymptomatic, the minister said.
FG Maintains Ebola Containment Measures
Pate commended the medical personnel who provided treatment and the public health teams responsible for coordinating the evacuation in line with appropriate infection prevention and control measures.
He assured Nigerians that the government’s response to the confirmed case remained ongoing, with public health authorities continuing efforts to prevent further transmission.
The minister also indicated that additional information would be provided after the patient and her spouse arrived safely at their destination.
He urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and rely on credible sources for information about the disease, warning against the circulation of unverified reports.
Background: Nigeria’s First Imported Ebola Case
Nigeria confirmed its first imported case of Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease on October 20, 2026, following laboratory confirmation of infection in a woman who had recently travelled from Uganda to Nigeria.
Reports indicate that the patient arrived in Nigeria on October 3 and developed symptoms several days later. She subsequently sought medical attention in Abuja before her infection was confirmed.
Following the confirmation, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) activated its response mechanisms, including contact tracing, laboratory investigations, surveillance and infection prevention measures.
As of the NCDC situation report dated October 24, 53 contacts associated with the confirmed case had been identified for monitoring. These included healthcare workers, domestic staff and the patient’s spouse. The agency’s reported findings at that time indicated that none of the identified contacts had tested positive.
Authorities have continued to monitor individuals who may have been exposed to the infection while strengthening surveillance and preventive measures to reduce the risk of further transmission.
What Nigerians Need to Know About Ebola
Bundibugyo Ebola Virus Disease is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, a member of the Ebola virus group. The infection can spread through direct contact with the blood or other body fluids of an infected person who is symptomatic, as well as contaminated materials.
Symptoms may include fever, fatigue, muscle pain, headache, sore throat, vomiting and diarrhoea.
Health authorities have urged members of the public to observe public health guidance, cooperate with officials conducting contact tracing and seek prompt medical attention if they develop symptoms following a possible exposure.
The Federal Government’s latest update underscores the importance of maintaining strict public health precautions even when a patient’s clinical condition improves.
Although the evacuation marks a significant development in the management of Nigeria’s confirmed case, authorities continue to focus on surveillance, contact monitoring and other measures aimed at preventing further transmission.
