Wike Takes Firm Action Against FCTA Directors Amid Ongoing Workers’ Strike in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed two directors of the Federal capital administration (FCTA) for allegedly instigating workers to continue the ongoing strike, defying court orders to resume work. The dismissed directors were accused of insubordination and political sabotage, encouraging civil servants to flout the National Industrial Court directive.

Wike emphasized that government employees on official salaries should not act as agents of disruption. He stated, “Civil servants have a duty to serve the public, not to instigate industrial actions that disrupt essential services.”

The strike, led by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), is over promotion arrears, welfare concerns, and other employee grievances. Despite the court ruling ordering workers to resume duty, many continued the industrial action, prompting disciplinary measures from the FCTA.

Wike reiterated the government’s willingness to engage in reasonable dialogue with workers, while insisting that compliance with legal directives remains non-negotiable. He warned that failure to adhere could lead to legal sanctions, including contempt proceedings against both union leaders and defiant employees.

Public services in Abuja have been significantly impacted, with residents and businesses calling for a swift resolution to the strike. Observers say the dismissal of the two directors signals that the federal capital administration is committed to discipline and continuity of public service.
