House of Reps to Examine Petitions on Age Restrictions Affecting Nigerian University Aspirants

The House of Representatives Committee on Ethics and Public Petitions has scheduled February 19, 2026, for a public hearing on complaints regarding the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s (JAMB) underage admission policy.

The hearing will address petitions from students, parents, and civil society groups challenging JAMB’s regulations that limit university admission for candidates below certain age thresholds. Critics argue that the policy unfairly restricts access to higher education for younger, academically qualified students.

This move comes amid ongoing debates and court cases surrounding the eligibility of underage candidates, with earlier legal actions temporarily blocking JAMB from enforcing strict age limits.

During the hearing, lawmakers are expected to examine JAMB’s admission procedures, hear directly from affected candidates and parents, and consider recommendations to ensure fair access to tertiary education in Nigeria.

The session highlights the National Assembly’s commitment to addressing public grievances and safeguarding educational opportunities for all qualified students.
