JOHESU Blames Tinubu Government for Prolonged Health Workers’ Strike as Citizens Bear the Brunt

JOHESU strike disrupts public hospitals as government delays salary adjustments.

Members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) have blamed the Tinubu-led Federal Government for the ongoing nationwide strike by health workers, which continues to disrupt public hospitals across Nigeria. The union says the government has failed to implement the long-overdue Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) adjustments, prompting prolonged industrial action.

The strike, now in its third month, has left many Nigerians struggling to access essential services, including maternity care, dialysis, and emergency treatment. JOHESU insists that the hardship faced by citizens should not be attributed to health workers, but to the government’s failure to fulfill its commitments.

In response, the Federal Ministry of Health has enforced a “No Work, No Pay” policy, suspending salaries for striking staff. Despite this, JOHESU maintains its stance, demanding immediate implementation of the salary adjustments and improved welfare conditions for members.

The strike has also drawn attention from major labour groups, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC), some of which have hinted at broader support if the government fails to resolve the dispute promptly.

Experts warn that continued disruption of public health services could worsen health crises in Abuja and other major cities, emphasizing the urgent need for negotiations and prompt government action to restore critical healthcare services.
