Critic Raises Alarm Over Alleged Excessive Spending In Lagos 2026 Budget

Former Lagos State governorship candidate, Funso Doherty, has criticised the proposed 2026 Lagos State budget, alleging that the government plans to spend ₦212 million on just 20 office chairs and tables, while earmarking about ₦20 billion for vehicles for 40 lawmakers.

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, Doherty raised concerns over the allocations in an open letter, describing the figures as excessive and unjustifiable at a time when many residents are grappling with economic hardship.

Doherty questioned the rationale behind the furniture expenditure, noting that the cost translates to over ₦10 million per chair and table, a figure he said does not align with prevailing market realities.

He also expressed concern over the proposed vehicle procurement, which reportedly allocates an average of over ₦500 million per lawmaker, arguing that such spending reflects misplaced priorities in governance.

The former governorship candidate called for greater transparency and accountability in the budgeting process, urging the Lagos State government and House of Assembly to release detailed breakdowns of proposed expenditures for public scrutiny before final approval.

The development has sparked reactions on social media, with many Nigerians questioning the scale of legislative spending amid rising costs of living, infrastructure deficits, and funding challenges in critical sectors such as healthcare and education.

As of the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government has not issued an official response to the allegations.
