Former Ekiti governor says FCT minister’s influence will shape council polls outcome in favour of APC
Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose, has predicted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) will emerge victorious in the forthcoming Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, attributing the anticipated outcome to the political influence of FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike.
Fayose made the assertion while speaking on national political developments, noting that Wike’s control of the political structure in Abuja and his ongoing infrastructural projects have positioned the APC strongly ahead of the polls.
According to Fayose, Wike’s role as Minister of the FCT has significantly reshaped Abuja’s political landscape, giving the ruling party an edge across the six area councils. He argued that elections are often influenced by power blocs and political alignment rather than party labels alone.
The former governor, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), acknowledged that Wike’s working relationship with the APC-led federal government has boosted the party’s acceptance in the FCT, despite internal criticism from opposition quarters.
Wike, a former Rivers State governor, has repeatedly stated that performance, not sentiment, should determine electoral choices, pointing to ongoing road construction, urban renewal projects, and administrative reforms across Abuja.
Political observers believe that Wike’s stance and visibility may significantly influence voter decisions, especially at the grassroots level where area council elections are often decided.
The FCT Area Council elections will determine leadership across Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Kwali, and Abaji, with major parties intensifying preparations ahead of the polls.
