Delta State Police Accused of Brutalising, Detaining Woman Over Condom Possession Amid Rising Public Outcry

Abuja, Nigeria – December 30, 2025 – In a shocking display of alleged police brutality, officers of the Delta State Police Command reportedly detained a 28-year-old woman, Miss Chinenye Nnaji, for several days over the alleged possession of a condom. The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with many condemning the officers’ actions as unlawful and dehumanising.

Woman Detained, Allegedly Brutalised by Police

According to eyewitnesses, the victim was arrested at Pinnacle Junction, Asaba, and forcibly taken to the Asaba Area Command along with other youths. Nnaji reportedly endured physical abuse, verbal insults, and three days of detention without adequate food or water. The woman claims she was labelled a prostitute and subjected to degrading treatment.

Allegations of Extortion in Delta Police Command

Sahara Reporters sources revealed that some officers allegedly demand money ranging from ₦150,000 to ₦250,000 for the release of detainees. Efforts to obtain comments from the Area Commander and the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer were unsuccessful at press time.

Public Outcry and Demand for Justice

Social media users have condemned the police conduct, calling for immediate investigation and accountability. Human rights advocates say such incidents highlight the need for stricter oversight and reforms within the police force to protect citizens’ rights.

Legal Perspective

Under Nigerian law, the arbitrary detention and maltreatment of citizens constitute serious violations of fundamental human rights. Experts urge victims to report such cases to the Nigerian Police Force’s internal affairs division or human rights organizations for prompt intervention.
