Nigerian Residents Raise Concerns Over Mass Arrests and Human Rights Abuses
The Nigerian military has reportedly arrested numerous men in Amasiri, Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, following a series of violent attacks that claimed several lives in neighbouring communities. Residents and local civil society groups say that the operation has affected virtually every adult male in the community, sparking fears of extrajudicial actions and human rights violations.
Eyewitnesses report that soldiers and other security personnel conducted cordon-and-search operations across the community, enforcing a government-imposed curfew while detaining many residents without clear due process. Some locals claim that homes were destroyed and families displaced amid the crackdown. Traditional leaders and community coordinators are reported to be among those detained, raising concerns from lawyers and human rights advocates.
The Nigerian Army, however, maintains that its presence in Amasiri is part of a joint security operation aimed at protecting civilians and preventing further violence following attacks in January that left several people dead. Military sources say that patrols and curfews are intelligence-driven measures to safeguard lives and property in the affected areas.
Human rights groups and community leaders are calling for an independent investigation into the arrests and alleged abuses, urging security forces to respect constitutional rights and ensure that innocent civilians are released promptly. The incident underscores the ongoing tension and fragility of security in Ebonyi State, particularly in areas affected by land disputes and communal clashes.
Residents continue to appeal to both the state and federal government to mediate the situation and restore normalcy, while emphasizing that heavy-handed military measures should not further victimize innocent civilians.
