Lawmakers demand audit of defence spending and strategy as fresh insurgent attacks raise concerns over security in Nigeria’s North-East

The Nigerian Senate has called for a comprehensive investigation into the operations of the military following a fresh wave of deadly attacks by Boko Haram insurgents in Borno State.

The resolution was reached during plenary after senators expressed deep concern over the resurgence of violence in the North-East, describing the situation as troubling and unacceptable. The lawmakers noted that the recent attacks have resulted in the loss of lives, destruction of property, and displacement of residents in affected communities.

As part of its directive, the Senate mandated its relevant committees to carry out a detailed audit of military expenditures, weapons procurement, and operational strategies in the ongoing fight against insurgency. The move is aimed at ensuring accountability and assessing the effectiveness of resources committed to national security.

Lawmakers stressed the need for transparency in the management of defence funds, pointing out that despite significant budgetary allocations over the years, insurgent groups continue to carry out coordinated attacks.

The Senate also urged security agencies to review and strengthen their counter-insurgency approach, including improving intelligence gathering, community engagement, and rapid response mechanisms to emerging threats.

The development comes amid growing public concern over the security situation in and other parts of the North-East, where Boko Haram and its splinter factions remain active.

The upper legislative chamber reaffirmed its commitment to supporting all efforts aimed at restoring peace and stability in the region, while calling on the military and other security agencies to step up operations to protect lives and property.
