Nigeria’s first gold medalist at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Rilwan Idris Sabo from Kuje Area Council, paid a thank-you visit to Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda, who pledged financial support and an automated wheelchair.

History was celebrated in Abuja as Nigeria’s first gold medalist at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Rilwan Idris Sabo, paid a courtesy visit to Distinguished Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda, MFR, CON, to express gratitude for his unwavering support following his historic achievement on the international stage.

Rilwan Idris Sabo, a native of Sabo community in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), recently made Nigeria proud by winning the country’s first gold medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, after an outstanding performance in the men’s heavyweight para powerlifting event, lifting over 208 kilograms to secure victory.

The visit brought together political leaders, community stakeholders, and supporters from Kuje Area Council, all united in celebrating the athlete’s remarkable accomplishment.

Speaking during the event, the Mandate Secretary of the FCT Agricultural Secretariat, Mr. Abdullahi Ango, who also hails from Kuje Area Council, commended Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda and the Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Hon. Samuel Shekwolo Danjuma, for their commitment to supporting and empowering talented young people.

He urged Rilwan not to let go of the opportunity and support available through the Aduda political platform, describing it as one that identifies, nurtures, and promotes gifted individuals to achieve greatness.

In his remarks, Hon. Samuel Shekwolo Danjuma appreciated everyone present, including the Chairman of Bwari Area Council, Hon. Joshua Ishaku Musa, the FCT State Chairman, Hon. Tanko Ishaku Yamawo, and other dignitaries who attended the reception.

The Kuje Chairman described Rilwan’s achievement as a proud moment for the entire council, noting that the gold medalist has placed Kuje Area Council on the global sporting map. He congratulated the athlete for his resilience, dedication, and determination, adding that it was a privilege for Kuje Area Council to host one of Nigeria’s newest sporting heroes.

Delivering his remarks, Distinguished Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda congratulated the people of Sabo community, Kuje Area Council, the Federal Capital Territory, and Nigerians at large for producing a champion whose achievement has brought honour to the nation.

The Senator recalled sponsoring a Nigerian team to the United States for an international sporting competition two years ago, noting that although not all members of that delegation were from the FCT, it gave him immense joy to now witness an athlete from the Federal Capital Territory not only represent Nigeria but also return home with a historic gold medal.

He prayed for Rilwan’s continued success and described him as living proof that “there is ability in disability.” Senator Aduda praised the gold medalist for his hardworking nature, revealing that beyond sports, Rilwan is also a skilled cobbler who makes quality shoes and other leather products, demonstrating resilience, determination, and self-reliance despite his disability.

As part of his support, Senator Aduda announced financial assistance for Rilwan to support both his sporting career and his business. He also pledged to provide him with an automated wheelchair to improve his mobility and quality of life.

The Senator did not fail to acknowledge the dedication and sacrifices of Rilwan’s coach, appreciating the vital role played in preparing and accompanying the athlete throughout his journey to international success.

The reception ended with renewed calls for greater investment in sports development, particularly para sports, as stakeholders described Rilwan Idris Sabo’s achievement as a testament to what determination, resilience, and proper support can accomplish.

Rilwan Idris Sabo’s historic victory remains a defining moment for Kuje Area Council, the Federal Capital Territory, and Nigeria, inspiring a new generation of athletes to pursue excellence regardless of the challenges they face.
