Russian Ambassador to Nigeria dismisses claims of Nigerian enlistment for Ukraine conflict, says unauthorized recruitment is unlawful

The Russian government has officially denied allegations that it is recruiting Nigerians to fight in the ongoing Ukraine war. Russian Ambassador to Nigeria, Andrey Podyelyshev, stated that there is no official programme or government-backed effort to enlist Nigerian citizens as soldiers.

He emphasized that any illegal recruitment attempts by individuals or private organisations are not connected to Russia and are considered unlawful under Russian law. Credible information on such activities can be forwarded to Russian authorities for investigation.

The denial follows media reports suggesting that some Africans, including Nigerians, were allegedly lured to Russia with promises of employment or pay, only to be sent to the Ukraine frontline. Russia maintains these claims are false and unrelated to its government.

Podyelyshev also highlighted ongoing military and economic cooperation between Russia and Nigeria, describing Nigeria as a key partner in West Africa, with discussions including military training programmes and potential equipment supplies.

This clarification is aimed at addressing concerns among Nigerians regarding recruitment for foreign conflicts and reaffirming that any such efforts outside official channels are illegal.
