U.S. submarine attack destroys Iranian naval vessel returning from India drill in the Indian Ocean, leaving at least 87 sailors dead and raising tensions between Washington and Tehran.

At least 87 Iranian sailors have reportedly been killed after a U.S. submarine sank an Iranian warship returning from a naval drill in India, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two countries.

According to reports, the Iranian naval vessel was sailing through the Indian Ocean after participating in a multinational naval exercise hosted by India when it was struck by a torpedo fired from a U.S. submarine. The attack reportedly occurred in international waters near the coast of Sri Lanka.

Sources indicate that the warship had more than 180 crew members on board at the time of the incident. Rescue operations were quickly launched by nearby maritime authorities, with dozens of sailors rescued from the water while search and recovery efforts continued for those initially reported missing.

The strike reportedly caused extensive damage to the vessel, leading to its rapid sinking. Sri Lankan naval authorities and emergency responders were said to be involved in the rescue and recovery operation as survivors were taken for medical attention.

Although full operational details have not been publicly disclosed, defense officials reportedly confirmed that the attack was carried out by a U.S. Navy submarine using a torpedo. Security analysts say the incident represents a major development in the growing military tensions involving Iran and the United States.

Iranian officials have condemned the incident, describing it as a hostile act and warning that the country reserves the right to respond. The development is expected to further heighten geopolitical tensions as the ongoing crisis continues to spread beyond the Middle East into the wider Indian Ocean region.

Analysts also warn that the incident could have broader implications for maritime security and international shipping routes, as global powers increase their military presence across strategic waterways.
