SCC Takes Over Apo-Karshi Project as FCTA Demands Faster Delivery
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has officially revoked the long-delayed Apo-Karshi road contract originally awarded in 2011. The 13-kilometre Apo-Karshi project, which was previously handled by Kakatar Construction Company Ltd., has now been re-awarded to SCC under an emergency arrangement following years of stalled progress.
Wike made the announcement on Thursday during an inspection tour of major road projects across Abuja, including the Karu–Customs–CBN Road, Gishiri–Katampe Road, and the Apo-Wasa Carriageway.
Apo-Karshi Road Re-Awarded Over Non-Performance
According to the minister, the old contractor failed to show meaningful progress on the Apo-Karshi road despite the strategic importance of the route to commuters linking Abuja’s city centre with the Karshi axis.
“We have terminated that contract, and it has been re-awarded to SCC. If you go there now, you will see they have started work,” Wike said.
He stressed that infrastructure projects like the Apo-Karshi road must not be politicized, adding that the welfare of residents remains the priority of the FCT Administration.
New Road Projects: Kubwa–Bwari Road Already Underway
Wike also revealed that the Kubwa to Bwari road has been awarded and work has already commenced. The route is expected to serve as a crucial alternative corridor for motorists and reduce travel pressure in the area.
Demolition for Public Interest, Not Sentiment
During the inspection at Karu, the minister engaged a shop owner whose property was marked for demolition for obstructing a water channel. While assuring her of adequate compensation, he maintained that the demolition is necessary to prevent flooding and ensure free water flow.
“You cannot block water channels and expect no consequences. We are sympathetic and will compensate, but public interest comes first,” he stated.
Residents’ Warm Reception Encourages Government
Wike expressed satisfaction with the reception from residents at the various project sites, saying it demonstrates public approval of the government’s development initiatives.
“Government is encouraged when people are happy. The goal of governance is to improve lives,” he added.
Projects to Be Commissioned During Tinubu’s 3rd Anniversary
The minister announced that many of the ongoing road projects—including the Apo-Karshi route—are scheduled for commissioning during President Bola Tinubu’s third-anniversary celebrations.

No New Projects in 2026
Looking ahead, Wike said the FCTA will not award new contracts in 2026, instead focusing on completing all ongoing projects. The decision is influenced by 2026 being a political year, making timely project delivery crucial.
