Cleric Decries Alleged Negligence As Doctors’ Strike Paralyzes National Hospital Abuja
A Nigerian cleric has condemned the reported death of a pregnant woman at the National Hospital, Abuja, allegedly caused by the absence of medical doctors during an ongoing strike, describing the incident as tragic and unacceptable.
According to reports by Sahara Reporters, the pregnant woman was rushed to the National Hospital, Abuja, in critical condition but was allegedly left unattended due to the industrial action embarked upon by doctors.
The woman was reportedly referred to see a doctor but could not receive immediate medical attention, leading to her eventual death.
Reacting to the incident, Reverend Father Celestine Eze, in an emotional video shared online, expressed deep anger and sorrow over the situation, questioning how a foremost federal medical facility in the nation’s capital could fail to save a pregnant woman.
The cleric lamented that hospitals meant to preserve life have become places of death due to unresolved labour disputes and government neglect.
“This is heartbreaking. A pregnant woman died because there were no doctors to attend to her. This should not be happening in Abuja,” he said.
Father Eze criticized the Federal Government and health authorities, urging them to urgently resolve the crisis in the health sector to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
He stressed that healthcare is a basic human right and should never be compromised, regardless of labour disagreements.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage among Nigerians, with many calling for an immediate end to the doctors’ strike and improved welfare for healthcare workers.
The doctors’ industrial action, which has crippled services in several federal hospitals, is reportedly linked to unresolved issues surrounding welfare, salaries, and working conditions.
The tragic death has once again highlighted the fragile state of Nigeria’s healthcare system and renewed calls for comprehensive reforms to ensure uninterrupted medical services, especially for vulnerable groups such as pregnant women.
