ADC urges INEC to reschedule FCT Area Council elections to ensure full voter participation during Ramadan
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally written to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), requesting the postponement of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council elections, originally scheduled for Saturday, 21 February 2026, due to the Ramadan fasting period.
In a letter dated 22 January 2026, signed by Senator David Mark, ADC National Chairman, and Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, ADC National Secretary, the party argued that holding the elections during Ramadan could discourage voter participation, particularly among observant Muslims. The letter emphasized that the timing may undermine inclusivity and affect the fairness of the polls.
The ADC urged INEC to reschedule the elections to a date that would allow all eligible voters to exercise their constitutional right to vote without religious or social constraints. The party also stated its readiness to follow appropriate legal procedures to support the request.
As of now, INEC has not confirmed any changes to the election date, and stakeholders are advised to monitor official communications from the commission.
