Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar calls for transparency in El-Rufai’s detention, criticizes selective prosecution, and urges respect for fundamental rights.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep concern over the detention of former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, warning that the Tinubu-led Federal Government would be held accountable if anything happens to him. Atiku called for clarity on El-Rufai’s whereabouts and condition, urging the government to disclose which agency is responsible for his detention and to ensure that his rights to legal representation, family access, and medical care are fully respected.
He criticized what he described as “selective prosecution”, asserting that opposition figures face targeted investigations while others are protected. He stressed the need for fairness and transparency in anti-corruption operations to uphold public trust.
El-Rufai has reportedly been detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in connection with alleged corruption during his tenure as Kaduna State governor from 2015 to 2023. His detention has sparked political debate nationwide, highlighting concerns about due process, human rights, and accountability in high-profile government investigations.
