The Abuja-based barber is seeking N1 billion in damages, alleging that a tear gas canister fired during a police operation in Bwari caused him permanent injury and loss of sight in one eye.
An Abuja-based barber has dragged the Nigeria Police Force and the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Bwari Division to court, demanding N1 billion in compensation after allegedly losing one of his eyes to a tear gas canister during a police operation in Bwari Area Council of the FCT.
According to reports, the incident happened during a disturbance in the area when police officers allegedly fired tear gas to disperse people. The barber claimed that one of the canisters hit him directly in the face, leaving him with a severe injury that later resulted in the loss of his eye.
Through his lawyers, the victim accused the police of negligence, excessive use of force, and violation of his fundamental human rights. He said the incident has not only caused him permanent physical damage but has also affected his means of livelihood and emotional wellbeing.
The lawsuit, reportedly filed before the Federal High Court, is seeking N1 billion in damages to cover medical treatment, emotional trauma, and the long-term impact of the injury.
The case has sparked reactions among Abuja residents and human rights advocates, many of whom are calling for accountability and more caution in the use of force during police operations.
