BREAKING: Resident Doctors Announce 48-Hour Weekly Work Limit for Doctors Nationwide

NARD says the new work-hour limit is aimed at reducing burnout, improving doctors’ welfare and strengthening patient care across Nigeria.

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced measures aimed at reducing excessive working hours among resident doctors, amid growing concerns over fatigue, burnout and the impact of prolonged shifts on healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

The development comes as the association continues to push for improved working conditions and better welfare for doctors across the country. NARD has previously raised concerns about the demanding nature of residency training and the pressure placed on doctors working within Nigeria’s public healthcare system.

Reports on the association’s position indicate that the proposed work-hour limit is intended to promote safer working conditions while improving doctors’ wellbeing and, ultimately, the quality of care provided to patients.

The issue of excessive working hours has remained a major concern within Nigeria’s health sector. Resident doctors frequently work extended shifts, with the association previously introducing a directive limiting continuous call duties to 24 hours as part of efforts to tackle burnout and prevent fatigue-related incidents.

The latest development also comes against the backdrop of renewed tensions between NARD and the Federal Government over salaries, allowances and other welfare concerns. In July 2026, the association threatened an indefinite nationwide strike over unresolved welfare issues, before the Federal Government reached an agreement with the doctors in early August to avert the planned industrial action.

NARD’s renewed focus on working hours highlights the wider challenges facing Nigeria’s healthcare system, including the shortage of medical personnel and the need to create a working environment that protects both healthcare workers and patients.

The association is expected to continue engaging relevant authorities on the implementation of measures designed to improve doctors’ working conditions and strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.
