National Open University of Nigeria Mourns Sudden Death of Senior Administrator
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
The university confirmed the tragic development in a statement signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi, on Sunday, September 6, 2026.
According to the statement, Marafa was shot while returning from Gusau, although the university did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or identify those responsible.
Marafa was described as a dedicated administrator who served the institution meritoriously and held various positions of responsibility during his career.
NOUN said his death represents a significant loss to the university community and extended condolences to his immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and other mourners.
The institution also said details concerning his burial arrangements would be communicated after receiving further information from the family.
The university prayed for Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus and give his family and the entire NOUN community the strength to bear the loss.
