Gunmen Attack Borgu Community Market, Leave Trail of Death in Niger State
At least 30 people have been confirmed dead following a deadly attack by suspected bandits on a popular market in Niger State, leaving many others abducted and several properties destroyed.
The attack occurred at Kasuwan Daji Market in the Demo community, Borgu Local Government Area, when heavily armed gunmen stormed the market during peak trading hours, firing sporadically and causing panic among traders and residents.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants arrived in large numbers, riding motorcycles and wielding sophisticated weapons. They reportedly shot indiscriminately, killing traders and shoppers on the spot, while others were forcefully taken away into the surrounding forests.
Local sources disclosed that the attackers also looted food items, cash, and valuables before setting parts of the market ablaze.
Security sources and community leaders confirmed that over 30 bodies have been recovered, while the number of abducted victims remains unclear, with reports suggesting dozens of traders, including women, were taken hostage.
Some residents fear the casualty figure may rise as several injured victims are receiving treatment in nearby hospitals, while others are still missing.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the attack, stating that joint security operatives have been deployed to the area to restore calm and commence search-and-rescue operations for the abducted victims.
Authorities said investigations are ongoing and efforts are being intensified to track the perpetrators and prevent further attacks.
The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents in Niger State and other parts of North-Central Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings, and communal attacks have continued to threaten lives, livelihoods, and food security.
Residents have repeatedly called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen security presence in rural communities and along major forest corridors used by criminal groups.
