700,000-barrel-per-day refinery expected to strengthen regional energy security, create jobs and position Lamu as a major industrial hub

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Dangote East Africa Petroleum Refinery has been described as a major step towards transforming Kenya’s energy and industrial landscape, with the $16 billion project expected to have significant economic impact across the region.

The ceremony was presided over alongside Aliko Dangote and witnessed by four African Heads of State, as well as other high-level delegations from across the continent, underscoring the regional significance of the ambitious project.

With a processing capacity of 700,000 barrels of crude oil per day, the refinery is expected to become the largest in East and Central Africa and one of the biggest in the world.

The project is projected to strengthen regional energy security, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products and support foreign exchange stability.

Beyond petroleum refining, the development will feature an integrated industrial complex comprising a 1,000-megawatt power plant, a plastic manufacturing facility, as well as fertiliser and chemical production plants.

The project is expected to boost Kenya’s economy by about 12 per cent and attract an additional $4 billion in foreign direct investment annually during the four-year construction period.

It is also projected to create about 60,000 direct jobs, develop local expertise and accelerate the transformation of the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) Corridor into a major industrial hub.

The development comes amid efforts to reduce Africa’s long-standing dependence on exporting raw materials while importing finished products.

The establishment of the refinery is being positioned as a major step towards promoting industrialisation, local manufacturing, job creation and value addition across the continent, while demonstrating the potential of large-scale investments to reshape Africa’s economic future.
