Controversial directive at Federal Polytechnic Bauchi sparks debate over student rights, religion and campus regulations in Bauchi State

has reportedly issued a directive banning male and female students from standing together during the Ramadan period, a development that has sparked widespread reactions across the country.

According to a report by the federal poly management circulated an internal memo dated February 25, 2026, warning students against forming pairs or appearing together in close proximity throughout the holy month. The directive allegedly cautioned that violators could face disciplinary action if found contravening the order.

The reported decision has generated mixed reactions among students, parents and civil society groups. Critics argue that such a policy raises concerns about personal freedoms and the constitutional rights of students in a public tertiary institution. Others, however, contend that schools situated in predominantly Muslim communities may introduce temporary conduct guidelines during Ramadan to reflect religious and cultural values.

The federal polytechnic, located in , had not issued a detailed public clarification at the time of filing this report. Efforts to obtain official confirmation or further explanation from the school’s management were ongoing.

The controversy has since fueled broader conversations about the balance between institutional discipline, religious observance and students’ rights within Nigeria’s diverse educational landscape.
