Kano Senator Orders Ex-NNPP Chairmen To Return Vehicles After Defection To APC

Move Deepens Political Tension As Defections Rock Kano Ahead Of 2027 Elections

A Senator representing Kano Central Senatorial District has directed former chairmen of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in the district to return vehicles earlier provided to them, following their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The directive, reportedly issued by Senator Rufai Sani Hanga, was contained in a letter dated January 28, 2026, instructing the affected former party officials to return the vehicles to his office in Kano. The vehicles were said to have been provided to support NNPP activities at the local government level.

The development follows a wave of political defections in the State, which has seen several NNPP leaders, including grassroots officials, move to the APC as part of ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources familiar with the situation said the senator maintained that the vehicles were party assets meant strictly for NNPP operations and should be returned now that the beneficiaries are no longer members of the party.

However, the directive has sparked mixed reactions, with critics describing the move as punitive, while others insist it is within the senator’s rights to reclaim party property. The controversy has further underscored the growing political tension in Kano State as parties position themselves for influence ahead of the next electoral cycle.
