Federal Polytechnic to become the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology as FG moves to strengthen technical education and Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, Nasarawa, in a move aimed at strengthening technical education and accelerating the development of Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The approval, announced by the Presidency on Friday, aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to expanding specialised higher education, developing skilled manpower, and unlocking the country’s vast mineral resources.
According to the Presidency, the decision followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Aliyu Wadada, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District. He argued that the state, known for its rich mineral deposits, is well-positioned to host a specialised university focused on mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and emerging technologies.
President Tinubu directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant agencies to begin the legal and administrative processes required for the institution’s transition from a polytechnic to a specialised federal university.
The new university is expected to serve as a centre of excellence for teaching, research, innovation, and workforce development, supporting Nigeria’s industrialisation drive and creating opportunities for students and professionals in the mining and engineering sectors.
The Presidency added that the initiative forms part of the administration’s broader agenda to invest in education as a catalyst for economic growth, technological advancement, job creation, and national development.
