Former SGF says he cannot remain in a party he claims has become a “rigging machine,” accusing the ADC of manipulating its presidential primaries in favour of Atiku Abubakar.
Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), alleging that the party’s recently concluded primaries were heavily manipulated in favour of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Lawal made the announcement in a statement published on his verified Facebook page on Monday, where he accused the party leadership of conducting what he described as a “disgraceful charade” rather than a credible democratic exercise.
According to him, the primary elections at various levels were allegedly rigged to favour Atiku, with results being written and rewritten to ensure the emergence of candidates loyal to the former vice president.
The former SGF claimed that in several instances, individuals who emerged victorious through the electoral process were replaced by members of what he referred to as Atiku’s political syndicate.
Lawal stated that he could no longer remain in a political party that, in his view, had abandoned fairness and transparency. He further argued that supporting Atiku’s presidential ambition would ultimately benefit President Bola Tinubu and increase the chances of the incumbent securing a second term in office.
His resignation adds to the growing controversies surrounding the ADC primaries, which have already attracted allegations of irregularities from some party stakeholders.
