Tinubu Administration Targets Faster National Connectivity With Proposed High-Speed Rail Project

The Federal Government has announced plans to develop a 360km/h high-speed rail line linking Lagos to Maiduguri, in what could become one of Nigeria’s most ambitious railway infrastructure projects.

The plan was disclosed in Abuja by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Transportation, Olufunso Adebiyi, who said the proposed project is part of the government’s broader efforts to modernise Nigeria’s rail transportation system and improve connectivity across the country.

The proposed high-speed rail corridor is expected to connect major cities and economic centres across Nigeria, facilitating faster movement of passengers and goods while strengthening inter-state connectivity.

The Lagos-Maiduguri route would span a significant part of the country, potentially linking communities and commercial centres across the southern, central and northern regions.

At a proposed speed of 360 kilometres per hour, the railway would mark a major development in Nigeria’s rail transportation system and could significantly reduce travel time between cities along the corridor.

The Federal Government said the initiative is aimed at improving transportation infrastructure, supporting economic growth and creating a more efficient national transport network.

The announcement comes as the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to prioritise infrastructure development, including the expansion and modernisation of Nigeria’s railway network.

If implemented, the Lagos-Maiduguri high-speed rail project could transform passenger and freight transportation across Nigeria, while opening up new opportunities for trade, investment and regional economic development.
