Lawmakers approve former SEC Director-General after committee screening and voice vote at plenary
The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Lamido Yuguda as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), following the consideration of a report presented by the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Adetokunbo Abiru, informed lawmakers that Yuguda was found qualified for the position based on his professional experience and competence in financial and monetary management. He also disclosed that no petition was submitted against the nominee during the screening process.
The confirmation was approved through a voice vote during plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Akpabio commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the appointment, describing Yuguda as “a square peg in a square hole” considering his background and experience in Nigeria’s financial sector.
During the screening exercise, senators adopted the traditional “take a bow and go” procedure in recognition of Yuguda’s previous engagements with the National Assembly and his past public service roles, including his tenure as Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Senator Danjuma Goje, who seconded the motion for confirmation, praised the nomination and expressed confidence in Yuguda’s ability to contribute meaningfully to the leadership of the apex bank.
