Super Eagles Coach to Lead Olympic Eagles as Federation Targets Long-Term Football Development
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reached an agreement with Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle on a contract extension that will see him take on an expanded role within Nigeria’s national football structure.
Under the new arrangement, Chelle will continue as head coach of the Super Eagles while also assuming responsibility for the Nigeria U-23 national team, popularly known as the Olympic Eagles.
The move is part of the NFF’s long-term strategy to strengthen the development pathway between the country’s youth and senior national teams as preparations begin for qualification campaigns ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, United States.
Sources close to the federation indicate that the renewed agreement includes improved terms and conditions, reflecting confidence in Chelle’s leadership and vision for Nigerian football. The new structure is expected to foster continuity in player development, allowing promising young talents to transition more seamlessly into the senior national team setup.
Since his appointment as Super Eagles coach, Chelle has been tasked with rebuilding the national team and positioning Nigeria for success in upcoming international competitions, including the FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the Africa Cup of Nations.
Football analysts believe that placing both the Super Eagles and the U-23 team under the same technical leadership could enhance tactical consistency and provide greater opportunities for emerging players to gain exposure at the highest level.
The Olympic Eagles role will place Chelle at the forefront of Nigeria’s quest to return to Olympic football and challenge for honours at the 2028 Games, building on the nation’s proud history in the competition.
